Genesis lost a staple member of our farm this week. Miss Henny Penny was raised from a day old chick. Her siblings and her produced eggs for some time. Though the others in her flock joined the big roost, Penny was a survivor. She became a staple at the farm and many enjoyed feeding her and some even had the privilege of petting her. As she got older, and her eggs less desirable, it became a fun game of hide and seek for the kids to find her eggs and toss them in to the field. Penny would frequently show up for CSA pick up to be fed and to watch as everyone gathered their vegetables. She would roost under the tomato plants in Discovery Gardens and watch the families harvest their produce. Penny was with us for 11 years. May she rest in peace.
On Saturday, September 23, we celebrated the end of the Discovery Gardens season. It was a lot of fun for everyone! We had food and sweet treats and games for the kids. Our yearly toad races were a big hit! Everyone won a race. The toads did great and were promptly returned to their homes after the race to relax from all of the excitement. To end off the season with a bang, we all launched tomatoes as far as we could! The kids competed to see who could launch theirs the farthest. In first place, Jonas' tomato went 130'. In second place, Danny's tomato flew a whole 122'; and in third place, with a tomato flight of 110', Zachary! After the kids were done, the adults got to have fun launching the old fruit tremendous distances. Discovery Gardeners will have one more week to finish harvesting the gardens before we prep the beds for winter. The last day for Gardeners to come out and pick up their deposits will be Saturday, September 30. Secure your garden for next summer! Sign up today for Discovery Gardens 2018. Gardens will be assigned in January on a first come, first serve basis. Sign up here!

This past week, we got to take a little road trip up to Sanoma County to check out the 7th Annual National Heirloom Expo. While there we saw so many different varieties of fruits and vegetables all naturally and organically grown. It was a very inspiring and enlightening experience.
Earlier this summer, Genesis Organic Farm was very happy to host FACE of Fresno's Summer Adventure Club on a farm field trip. The kids came out early and learned a bit about how we grow the delicious, high quality produce that we are known for. The students got to pick their own fruit and vegetables to take home to their families. They learned valuable skills and knowledge to help them make better choices at the dinner table.
Genesis Organic Farm has been serving the Hanford area for 10 years! We've had a lot of changes happen and a lot of updates. We now have a new tractor, and a new farmer! Tracy has taken on Good Seed CSA as well as Discovery Gardens. We've also redesigned our website. We hope that you find it easy to use and well organized. We look forward to growing amazing food for decades to come! Thank you everyone for your support.
We were happy to team up with Kings Community Action Organization to teach children about farmers markets this past week. KCAO put together a mock market where children could come and use fake money to pay for their produce. They had the opportunity to ask growers questions and get free, quality organic food for their families.
Last year, we saw the end of the big red tractor that plowed the fields and sculpted the beds. We were not sure what to do and were looking at renting tractors as we needed them. Months of research later, we decided on the BCS 749 with electric start.
BCS tractors are the vegetable farmer's go-to work horse and are used in many small acreage applications. The small size and heavy duty engine make it ideal for bed maintenance and landscaping tasks around the farm. It has a collection of attachments that customize it to whatever job is at hand. The machine is Italian made and should last us for a very long time! |
